Audi TDI A3 suspension is essentially more powerful configuration makes VW GTI nimble, though not exactly the same. A3 responses were as excited and just limited body roll, quick recovery in the fast transients, skidpad grip feasible (0.83 g), as the Golf, but the suspension tuning is not flexible enough, providing periodic jolt to the gnarly pavement dwellers, as well as a fair amount noise. Owner provided to back-street blitz occasionally may not be entirely satisfied with the support given by A3 bucket seats, which are not as comfortable or sporty-like those in the Golf TDI. (An optional Sport package that includes seats short of our car is sporty, but also adds even stronger suspension and larger wheels, which might exacerbate the violence increased.) Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf amount of the fair share of hardware subcutaneous, and cousinhood company. The architecture is pretty much identical, and there is also considerable powertrain-parts-bin similarity, as exemplified by the new addition to A3 lineup.
But it would be a mistake to think of A3 as a job only Detroit-style badge. There is a little more substantial feel to the A3, a little, looks more of the upper classes in, and, of course, a face unmistakably Audi. Will Audi provide enough pictures to justify the premium price for what, after all, a compact car? Good question, which we will be back in a few minutes. First, a little work the street.
The A3 at Play, On the other hand, a respectable braking performance-171 feet from 70 mph. And abundant in a small turbo-diesel 236 pounds-feet of torque, delivered in this case to the front wheels with dual-clutch six-speed automated manual (known as S Tronic in Audi-speak), tugboats in the car forward with enthusiasm, even given off -the-line rather clumsy clutch takeup symbol of the S Tronic gearbox.
Enthusiasm, however, is not the same as fast-speed diesel engines generally do not perform. We clocked 0-term-to-60-mph in 8.5 seconds and a quarter mile in 16.7 at the 82 mph. That’s not good enough as a Golf TDI we tested recently, must be because A3′s heftier curb weight of 3423 pounds, this car exceeded Golf test by 237 pounds.
That seems like a big difference, but there is a mitigating factor. That Golf is a three-door model; A3 appears only as a five door. Is slightly larger A3 of Golf five-door, in particular, longer-169 versus 165.4 inches, giving more to see A3-station wagon (Sportback, Audi words) of the classic Golf hatchback. And this also happens to be heavy on special A3 choice. More on that when we get to show-me-the money-.
So, no nosebleed in the acceleration department, but the combination of low rpm torque A3 about, minimal turbo lag, and crispy change from the dual-clutch automatic create an effective tool for surgical traffic. And of course there are fuel economy, a key reason for the diesel-fication. Divination EPA 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway for the A3 TDI. We average 33 mpg during our trip, most urban and suburban areas, and most of the rush. There is no doubt that a better result can be achieved with a little less pressing. And hard to imagine people are not willing to love this small oil stove, who went about the business with engagingly muted snore.
High price
As noted, there is a price premium for diesel-and diesel-whatever happened to the prestige of the Audi badge and front end. A3 TDI prices starting at $ 30,775, that $ 2,680 more than A3 with the same transmission and gasoline 2.0-liter turbo four, the other only engine offered. It is also quite $ 6,165 higher than the equivalent cost of a Golf TDI.
What you get for extra money, besides the presence of typical Audi, is 4.5 cubic feet more cargo space (19.5 total) compared with a five-door Golf, the advantage would be more appreciated if the split-folding rear seat would be true fold completely flat.
Beyond that, there is a standard stability control, aluminum wheels 17-inch, dual-zone climate control automatic; AM / FM / CD / Sirius satellite audio, a tilt and telescoping steering column with wheel, sporty leather-wrapped, cruise control, and regular array of passive safety features.
We mentioned an upscale look to the interior, coupled with standard leather seats. But that looks upscale is also strengthened by $ 6,650 in options classes above: navigation ($ 2,050), which includes the iPod interface, Premium Plus group ($ 2,000), which includes xenon headlamps, Bluetooth connectivity, three-spoke steering wheel with controls excessive, chair drivers power-adjustable’s, interior aluminum trim, and wheels, alloy 10-spoke; a sunroof power ($ 1,100), and packet-Leisure a rearview mirror, auto-dimming with compass, glass, wipers and light sensor, and a Bose premium audio system ($ 1,000). Cold weather package ($ 500), heated front seats, glass-washer nozzles and side mirrors, round out the extra.
You will note the existence of Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system, which for 2010 is only available on A3 2.0T models of gas, perhaps in an effort to keep costs down and the TDI is in fuel-economy figures as high as possible.
A $ 37,425 Question
All of the above, plus destination and delivery costs ($ 825), was added to the Audi A3 $ 37,425. To which we say, “Wowee!”
No doubt that the A3 TDI stacks up as premium compact wagon. But there are big questions, in our minds at least, whether this or other premium compact pile high enough to justify the price. Like other Audis, keep your calculator handy when you’re checking the option boxes.
